The Mackinac House: Everything You Need to Know Before You Check In

There are so many places to stay on Mackinac Island that choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. During our recent visit, we stayed at The Mackinac House, a charming boutique hotel located just a short walk from the ferry docks and many of the island’s most popular attractions.

Before our stay, I found myself asking all the usual questions: How far is it from the ferry? What are the rooms like? Is breakfast included? Is it family-friendly? In this guide, I’m sharing everything we learned during our stay, along with our honest thoughts and tips, so you can decide if The Mackinac House is the right choice for your Mackinac Island vacation.

How To Get To The Mackinac House on Mackinac Island

The Mackinac House is conveniently located on Market Street, just a short walk from the ferry docks.

If you arrive via Arnold Transit from Mackinaw City, simply walk toward the downtown area and cross the street. Head down the walkway between the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau and the public carriage tour office. This will dead end into Market Street and you will take a right.

If you arrive via Arnold Transit Ferry from St. Ignace or Shepler’s Ferry from Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, cross Main Street and walk up Astor Street. Turn right onto Market Street, towards Fort Mackinac/Marquette Park and you’ll find The Mackinac House on the left-hand side of the street.

Its central location makes it easy to reach restaurants, attractions, shopping without needing a carriage taxi.

How Far Is The Mackinac House From the Ferry Docks?

One of the things we loved most about staying at The Mackinac House was how close it was to the ferry docks.

• Arnold Transit Dock (Mackinaw City): Approximately a 2-minute walk
• Arnold Transit Dock (St. Ignace): Less than a 5-minute walk
• Shepler’s Ferry Dock (Mackinaw City and St. Ignace): Approximately a 5-minute walk

Most guests can easily walk to the hotel with their luggage, though dock porter service is available if you would prefer assistance.

When is Check-In Time at The Mackinac House?

Check-in begins at 3:00 pm.

If you arrive before your room is ready, luggage storage is available so you can begin exploring Mackinac Island right away.

When is Check-Out at The Mackinac House?

Check-out is by 11:00 a.m.

If your ferry departs later in the day, the hotel can store your luggage after check-out so you can continue enjoying the island before heading home. Or you can have your luggage sent ahead on a ferry so that it’s waiting for you when you arrive back on the mainland.

The Mackinac House Luggage Policy

One thing to know before you arrive is that luggage is not automatically delivered to The Mackinac House from the ferry docks. If you’d like help with your bags, you’ll need to arrange for a dock porter ahead of time.

During our stay, we used Dave, and he was fantastic! He met us when we arrived on the island, helped with our luggage, and was just as helpful when it was time to check out. It made the entire process so much easier, especially if you’re traveling with multiple bags or children.

If you’re interested in using a dock porter, contact The Mackinac House before your trip and they can provide you with Dave’s contact information and help you make arrangements.

Note: Dock porters work for tips, and a gratuity of $3–$5 per bag is generally recommended.

Yes! A complimentary continental breakfast is available daily in the lobby from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Breakfast offerings may include:

*Gluten-free options are also available.

If you’re lucky, you may even get to try some of Alissa’s homemade sourdough bread. During our stay, she served a blueberry cream cheese sourdough that was absolutely delicious!

What Time Is Quiet Hours at The Mackinac House?

Quiet hours are observed daily from 10:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m.

During this time, the front porch, lobby, and breakfast area are also closed to help ensure a peaceful environment for all guests.

Is The Mackinac House Accessible?

Yes. The Mackinac House offers accessibility features for guests with mobility needs.

The property includes:

• Ramp entrance
• One accessible King Room on the main floor
• Barrier-free roll-in shower with seat and grab bars
• Grab bars located near the toilet

Guests with specific accessibility needs should contact the hotel directly to ensure the room will meet their requirements.

Does The Mackinac House Hotel Have Elevators?

No, The Mackinac House does not have an elevator which means you will have to use the stairs if you are on the 2nd or 3rd floor.

However, guests requiring accessible accommodations can stay in the accessible King Room located on the main floor.

Does The Mackinac House Allow Dogs?

No, The Mackinac House does not allow pets.

Is The Mackinac House Smoke-Free?

Yes. The Mackinac House is a completely non-smoking property. Smoking is prohibited in guest rooms, on balconies, and anywhere on hotel grounds. This policy also includes electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. Guests who violate the policy may be subject to cleaning fees. Please refer to the hotel’s website for complete details.

Does The Mackinac House have Bike Rentals?

No, The Mackinac House does not offer on-site bike rentals. However, several Mackinac Island bike rental companies are located just a short walk from the hotel.

Can You Bring Your Own Bike?

Yes! Guests are welcome to bring their own bicycles to Mackinac Island.

Please note that both ferry companies charge a separate fee to transport bicycles. Visit the ferry websites (Arnold Transit and Shepler’s Ferry) for current pricing and policies.

What We Loved About Our Stay at The Mackinac House

One of the things that stood out to us before we even arrived was the level of communication we received from Alissa. She was wonderful to work with leading up to our stay and was always quick to answer any questions we had, making the entire process feel stress-free.

When we arrived on Mackinac Island, Dave, our dock porter, was waiting to assist with our luggage. He was incredibly friendly, professional, and accommodating both when we arrived and when it was time to leave the island. If you’re planning to use the dock porter service, I highly recommend reaching out to him.

The front desk staff immediately made us feel welcome and took the time to explain everything we needed to know about the property, breakfast, snack times, and island recommendations.

Our room quickly became one of our favorite parts of the stay. We stayed in one of the balcony rooms overlooking Market Street, and I found myself spending quite a bit of time sitting outside simply watching the horses, bicycles, and people pass by. There is something special about slowing down and taking in the sights and sounds of Mackinac Island from your own private balcony.

If you stay at The Mackinac House during the summer season, make sure you open your window or step outside just before 10:00 p.m. each evening. Fort Mackinac plays Taps every night, and hearing it echo across the island is one of those simple experiences that never gets old. It is peaceful, moving, and one of my favorite Mackinac Island traditions.

The location was another huge advantage. The Mackinac House is only a short walk from the ferry docks while still feeling tucked away from some of the busiest downtown areas. Restaurants, shopping, Fort Mackinac, Marquette Park, and many of the island’s most popular attractions were all within easy walking distance.

The afternoon snack service was another unexpected perk. After spending hours exploring the island, it was nice to stop back at the hotel, grab a quick snack, recharge, and head back out for more adventures.

Overall, we found The Mackinac House to be welcoming, comfortable, and conveniently located. The friendly staff, thoughtful amenities, comfortable rooms, and excellent location made it a wonderful home base for our Mackinac Island getaway.

Would We Stay Here Again?

Absolutely!

We left feeling like we had found a place that fit our family’s travel style perfectly. It was comfortable, welcoming, and made our time on Mackinac Island easy and enjoyable.

In many ways, it reminded me of staying in an Airbnb, but with the added benefits of hotel amenities, daily breakfast, afternoon snacks, housekeeping, and staff available to help if you need anything. It felt comfortable, relaxed, and welcoming from the moment we arrived.

For travelers who prefer smaller properties with a more intimate feel rather than a large resort experience, I think The Mackinac House is a wonderful option. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily book it again on a future trip to Mackinac Island.

What Our Family Liked Most About Staying Here

If I had to choose just one thing, it would be the combination of the location and the atmosphere. We loved being able to walk almost everywhere while still having a peaceful place to return to at the end of the day. Sitting on our balcony overlooking Market Street, listening to the horses clip-clop by, and hearing Taps from Fort Mackinac each evening felt like the perfect Mackinac Island experience. It’s those simple moments that ended up becoming some of our favorite memories from the trip.
