25 Must Read Books All About Spring

Spring is here!

The earth is beginning to come alive again after a long winter full of rest. Wildlife is awakening from hibernation and birds are returning home after spending winter down south. We can’t seem to get enough of chicks hatching, budding flowers, vegetable seedlings emerging, and gentle rain showers passing by. With all of the new growth and life surrounding us, we are jumping for joy!

We’ve put together a list of our favorite books all about spring! Some of them help us answer questions about all of the changes around us and some are stories that make us think about the season. All of them make us want to venture out into nature and explore.

Perhaps, your kids will grow some new ideas too from our list of favorite spring time books. Enjoy!

Welcome Spring

and then it’s spring by Julie Fogliano. Waiting for spring to arrive can be hard. Winter sometimes has a way of sticking around for a while. This book follows a little boy and his dog who can’t wait to see spring colors. He plants seeds to spruce things up and begins to wonder what is taking them so long to grow. A great story about the small changes each day that mean spring is on the way.

Everything Spring (National Geographic Kids) by Jill Esbaum. Spring is full of new life and there is so much to explore. Real-life photographs of baby animals help tell the story of spring’s arrival and the changes occurring outside. The babies are irresistibly cute and it is easy to fall in love with this book!

Spring: An Alphabet Acrostic by Steven Schnur. An “A-Z” walk-through all things spring! This book shows you many things that occur as winter leaves and spring arrives. New life is everywhere and we enjoy seeing all the baby animals and budding flowers pictured throughout Spring.

Weather in Spring by Martha E. H. Rustad. You’ve hear the saying “April showers bring May flowers,” but have you ever wondered why it rains so much in the spring? Weather in Spring looks at the changes in our weather that occur during spring, including our favorite, thunderstorms.

Spectacular Spring: All Kinds Of Spring Facts And Fun by Bruce Goldstone. This book is jam packed full of brilliant pictures, interesting facts, and plenty of creative spring crafts. You can’t help but be in a good mood after reading this book. Make sure you check out his other books for the other seasons: Super Summer, Awesome Autumn, and Wonderful Winter.

That Spring Feeling in the Air

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White (Charlene’s favorite book). This timeless, classic story begins on a farm in spring with the birth of a pig who is the runt of the litter. Fern, the farmer’s daughter, can’t stand the thought of this tiny pig being destroyed and manages to convince her father to let her raise him. Fern names the piglet Wilbur and together they enjoy the wonders of spring and friendship. Wilbur eventually becomes too big to stay with Fern and is sent to live at Mr. Zuckerman’s farm down the road. While there he learns he will eventually become dinner and makes a surprising friend who vows to save his life. We cannot say enough good things about this story. Beautiful in every way.

Possum and the Peeper by Anne Hunter. Possum cannot believe what has just happened… someone has woken him from his slumber with a peeping noise. He is not happy with this and sets out to find who is responsible for so rudely awakening him. Along his journey he finds others who are bothered by all this peeping and they join him in his search. When they find the culprit they also learn an important lesson about the beauty of spring.

Bunny’s Noisy Book by Margaret Wise Brown. Little bunny wakes from a restful night’s sleep in his burrow, to the sounds of many interesting noises outside. He spends his day excitedly figuring out what each sound is and as night falls he hears even more still. The pictures are adorable and the artist has hidden her last name on each page for you to find.

Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey. Mr. and Mrs. Mallard duck live in Boston and are looking for the perfect spot to build their nest and hatch their young. They scour the city in search of a place that isn’t too busy for family life. Together, they raise eight chicks and proudly show off their brood around town as they go about day-to-day life in the city.

Have You Seen My Duckling? by Nancy Tafuri. Being a momma duck isn’t easy with a nest full of children to look after. When one duckling disappears, mom and the rest of her babies must go on a journey to find him. Follow along through the pond in search of the missing baby duck.

Home for a Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown. Spring is in the air and little bunny is looking for the right place to call home. Follow along as he passes other creatures and tries to figure out if he belongs in any of their homes. Sweet illustrations and simple text made this an easy favorite in our homes.


The Street Beneath My Feet by Charlotte Guillain. With winter snow melting and the ground beginning to thaw, we find we are out taking walks more during the spring. As we walk about, our kids can’t help but wonder what lies below our feet. Thankfully, we found The Street Beneath My Feet to help answer our questions. This adorable book takes a look at what exactly is going on underneath our streets, sidewalks and country sides. We love the artwork by Yuval Zommer (he also illustrated The Big Book of the Blue found on our Ocean Resources post)!

Brand New Life

A Nest Is Noisy by Dianna Hutts Aston. When we think of spring, we almost immediately think of bright blue Robin’s eggs, nestled in a cozy nest. The sounds of birds fill the trees and it is fun to try and spot nests among their branches. Searching makes us wonder, where are other baby animals born? A Nest is Noisy answers that question and takes a look at the many creatures that build nests for their families.

An Egg is Quiet by Dianna Hutts Aston. An irresistible look at the many different kinds of eggs and what happens inside them. The artwork is very sweet and there are beautiful examples of the variety of colors and shapes that can be found in eggs. With so much going on inside, it is a wonder eggs are quiet!


Outside Your Window: A First Book of Nature by Nicola Davies. Starting with spring, this book takes readers on a poetic journey through the seasons to explore what makes each fun and exciting. The Bird Cakes recipe is a fun spring activity to help welcome home some of the returning birds and those that stayed for winter.

Gardens Galore!

Flowers Are Calling by Rita Gray. Springtime transforms the earth with a blanket of colorful flowers and plants. They pop up in all kinds of places! How do they do it though, since they are stuck in the ground? Flowers Are Calling is an excellent book that explains who is responsible for helping plants to reproduce and how plants and animals work together.


Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt by Kate Messner. Growing a garden takes a lot of work! Thankfully, we have dozens of helpers, often hidden from view. This book talks about the many tiny critters that live above and below our gardens, that help our plants grow strong and healthy. Following the story, there is an adorable list with information about some of the friends and foes found in our gardens.

From Seed To Plant by Gail Gibbons (a “Perhaps This Is…” favorite author). This is an easy to understand look at how plants reproduce. The explanations are simple and sprinkled with scientific terms. This is a great book for younger readers and does a fantastic job of introducing how new plants are made.


Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert. Now this is a topic we are familiar with… the story of a mom and her child planting a garden! In the fall they plant bulbs and together they must wait until spring for the rainbow of color to arrive. Vibrant colors bring this book to life.

The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. Little Liam lives in a gray, concrete city where everyone stays indoors most of the time. Liam love the outdoors and explores every chance he gets. One day he finds a tiny, dying patch of flowers in a most unexpected place. Liam decides to care for the plants and revives them, and in doing so he rekindles his city’s love of nature.

Fletcher and the Springtime Blossoms by Julia Rawlinson. Fletcher the fox is excited to explore all the beauty of spring’s arrival. His celebrations are interrupted when he spots snow swirling in the sky. Worried that winter is returning, he warns all of his friends. This book looks at all the wonders of spring, including sometimes snow!

Bloom Boom! by April Pulley Sayre. Get an up close look at the BOOM of flowers as they BLOOM during spring. Whether they bloom once, or over and over, the detail in each flower will leave you speechless. Each photo is absolutely beautiful! In the back of the book there is a detailed description of each flower and where they can be found across the U.S.A. This book will for sure put you in the mood to dig in the dirt.

We are the Gardeners by Johanna Gaines and Kids. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on this book, the illustrations hooked us immediately. We Are the Gardners is about Johanna Gaines’ family and their journey to plant a garden. You’ll learn all about their family’s adventure from the planning, failures and triumphs to some sneaky intruders and secret agents! Sweet, important lessons are learned throughout.

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. Follow along as a tiny seed overcomes obstacles to become a beautiful flower. The Tiny Seed introduces younger listeners to the concept of how seeds become plants, by giving just the right amount of information.

A Seed Is Sleepy by Dianna Hutts Aston. This is the perfect book to learn about what is happening inside a seed. Such a variety are featured in this book, even some you may’ve never seen before.

It Starts with a Seed by Laura Knowles. As children, we were fascinated by the seeds of the Sycamore tree, which we called “helicopters” or “propellers.” It is no surprise, now that we are grown and have kids of our own, they are intrigued by them as well. This book shows you how a Sycamore seed grows into a beautiful tree and becomes an important part of nature.
