As part of the nationwide America250 celebration, Fort Mackinac is one of the most patriotic places you can spend Independence Day on Mackinac Island.

The historic fort is decked out in red, white, and blue with patriotic banners, flags, and bunting as guests step back in time for an authentic 1880s-style Independence Day celebration. Throughout the afternoon, visitors can join in traditional children’s games on the parade ground, enjoy live music, and experience the sights and sounds of a Fourth of July celebration from nearly 150 years ago.
Schedule of Events:
- 3:00 p.m. – Music on the Parade Ground
- 3:15 p.m. – Traditional children’s games including catch, baseball, foot races, and relay races
- 4:15 p.m. – Reading of the Declaration of Independence, raising of the colors, patriotic toast, national salute, and cannon salute
One of the highlights of the day is the national salute, featuring 38 rifle blasts honoring the 38 states that made up the United States during the 1880s, followed by a cannon salute overlooking the Straits of Mackinac.
Standing inside a historic fort while hearing the Declaration of Independence read aloud is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices, courage, and determination that helped shape our nation. With America’s 250th birthday being celebrated this year, the experience feels especially meaningful.
