My kids are still talking about the pool, lawn games, and all the fun activities, while I loved the peaceful setting and those unbeatable views of the Mackinac Bridge. The property recently underwent a $40 million renovation and officially reopened in June of 2024, blending its historic character with refreshed accommodations and brand-new amenities.

What also makes Stonecliffe stand out is that it’s a humanitarian hotel. This means the resort is committed not only to creating memorable guest experiences but also to giving back—whether through sustainable practices, supporting local communities, or investing in initiatives that have a positive social impact. The Inn at Stonecliffe History

Originally built in 1904, this grand Tudor-style mansion was designed as a summer retreat for Chicago industrialist Michael Cudahy. For decades, it served as a private estate, hosting gatherings and giving its owners a quiet escape from city life. Over the years, Stonecliffe evolved multiple times and eventually became the boutique hotel you see today.

What makes it so special is that you can still feel that history as you walk the halls. The mansion retains much of its original charm, with architectural details and design touches that hint at its storied past. Sitting on the lawn, gazing out over the Straits, it’s easy to imagine the families who summered here more than a century ago.

For history buffs like myself, staying at Stonecliffe feels like stepping back in time—yet with all the comfort and luxury of a modern resort. Every corner of the property seems to have a story to tell, making your stay more than just a vacation—it’s an experience steeped in Mackinac Island’s rich past.

1.) The Inn at Stonecliffe Map

Where is The Inn at Stonecliffe? It sits on the west bluff of the island perched high above the shoreline with panoramic views of the Mackinac Bridge. It’s tucked away from the downtown bustle, a little less than two miles from downtown, but close enough that you can still easily bike or take a carriage ride into town.

There are multiple buildings on the property including the Mansion, the Summer House, the Wellness Center, the Bike Pavilion, The General Store, The Backyard Restaurant, The Sunset Pavilion, as well as multiple private cottages.

2.) How to get to The Inn at Stonecliffe

Since there are no cars on Mackinac Island, you’ll either walk, bike, or take a horse-drawn carriage taxi from the ferry dock. The Inn at Stonecliffe Shuttle runs regularly between the ferry docks and the Inn for added convenience. It picks up right across from the Shepler’s Ferry dock but it’s also a short walk from both Arnold Transit ferry docks.

Before you arrive on the island, you will receive an email with the shuttle schedule so that you can plan accordingly when you arrive on the island. Your shuttle ride when you arrive to the Inn as well as your departure ride are included in your stay. The shuttle ride takes about 45 minutes to and from the Inn.

3.) The Inn at Stonecliffe Check-In Time

Check-in begins at 4:00 PM. Early check-in may be available depending on room readiness.

Check-out is at 11:00 AM, giving you time to enjoy a relaxing morning before heading into town or catching your ferry.

5.) The Inn at Stonecliffe Luggage Policy

When you arrive at the ferry docks on the mainland (either Arnold Transit or Shepler’s), your bags will be tagged for The Inn at Stonecliffe and you’ll get a claim ticket for each piece. Once you arrive on Mackinac Island, a Stonecliffe dock porter will collect your luggage and have it sent up to the resort. At check-in, simply hand over your claim tickets and your bags will be delivered right to your room.

For departure, let the front desk know at least an hour before you want to leave so they can arrange for your luggage to be picked up from your room. Plan ahead—call at least two hours before your ferry time to make sure everything gets back down to the dock in time. We usually have our luggage sent to the mainland while we stay on the island to explore more before we have to leave. That way it’s waiting for us when we arrive back to the mainland.

Pro tip: Once your bags are sent off, they’re out of reach for a while. Keep essentials like medications, snacks, or a light jacket with you in a backpack or carry-on.

Inside, the 16 newly updated rooms combine historic charm with modern comfort, creating the feeling of staying in your own private Great Lakes retreat.

Guests can choose from a variety of room types, including king, queen, double queen, and the spacious Straits King Suite. Each one is designed with comfort in mind, offering amenities such as deluxe bedding, elegant décor, and cozy seating areas. Added touches like complimentary Wi-Fi, a built-in mini fridge, a Nespresso machine, and plush robes and slippers make the experience feel both luxurious and welcoming. And if that wasn’t enough, some rooms even feature stunning views of the Mackinac Bridge.

8.) The Inn at Stonecliffe Bike Rental

One of the best ways to explore Mackinac Island is on two wheels, and The Inn at Stonecliffe makes it easy with on-site rentals. Head to the General Store to pick up a bike from the Bike Pavilion—no need to run downtown first. Rentals are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with options for adults, teens, kids, and even Burleys if you’re traveling with little ones.

You can rent for a half day (4 hours) or a full day (8 hours), with pricing starting around $60 for adult bikes, $42 for teen/kid bikes, and $52 for Burleys. (Pricing as of 9/1/2025) All rentals must be returned by the end of the day.

Biking from Stonecliffe is especially nice for exploring the interior of the island, with easy access to trails that wind through Mackinac Island State Park, past landmarks, and into quieter areas most visitors don’t see.

Stonecliffe makes it easy to fill your days without ever leaving the property. Whether you’re looking to relax, learn something new, or keep the kids busy, there’s always something happening. A few of the activities you might find include:

• The Straits – A casual-yet-upscale restaurant offering a full breakfast each morning and dinner in the evening.
• The Straits Lawn & Patio – Perfect for al fresco dining, open for lunch and dinner with beautiful island views.
• Horsey’s Pub – A cozy spot to grab a drink and unwind.

And if you’d rather stay in, Stonecliffe also offers room service, making it easy to enjoy a quiet meal in your room or on your balcony.

11.) What’s near The Inn at Stonecliffe

One of the best parts about staying at The Inn at Stonecliffe is that you’re close by some of Mackinac Island’s hidden gems. Sunset Rock is only a short walk from the property and offers one of the most breathtaking views of the sun setting over the Straits. A little farther away at British Landing, you’ll find Cannonball Oasis, a fun stop for quick bites like burgers, hot dogs, and their famous fried pickles. You’ll also have easy access to Mackinac Island State Park’s hiking trails, which wind through the island’s interior and lead to unique spots like Crack-in-the-Island and Cave of the Woods.

Lightweight shorts, sundresses, or breathable tops work perfectly, and don’t forget a swimsuit for the pools. (Goggles and pool toys are a must if you’re traveling with kids! My son LOVED these!) One of the most charming features of Stonecliffe, in my opinion, is its historic orchard. It has recently been brought back to life with new apple trees, and the space now feels like a nod to the property’s past with a fresh twist. The orchard is also home to a small flock of chickens and a raised garden bed where seasonal herbs and produce are grown—ingredients that often make their way into the kitchen for guests to enjoy.

In addition to the orchard and gardens, Stonecliffe has also introduced beehives on the property. Not only do they support the local ecosystem, but in time, guests will even be able to purchase Stonecliffe’s very own honey—a sweet souvenir straight from the island.

15.) Don’t miss the 1904 Candy Cart!

Each evening at 7:04 PM, (19:04 in military time is a nod to the Mansion’s 1904 roots), staff roll a vintage candy cart onto the Sunset Pavilion patio, where guests are treated to a complimentary sweet before the sun dips behind the bridge. It’s a charming, family-friendly moment to remind you where we all have been and the sweetness yet to come.

Pro tip: arrive a few minutes early, and if anyone in your group has food allergies, just ask a team member to check ingredients.

The Inn at Stonecliffe Review

Our family had such a wonderful stay at The Inn at Stonecliffe, and the Sunny Honey Cottage was absolutely perfect for us. We loved the spacious layout, the beautiful décor, and its location on the property—it was close to everything, yet still felt private and relaxing. It would truly make an ideal spot for an extended family vacation, with plenty of room for everyone to spread out and enjoy themselves.

We took full advantage of the on-site dining, starting our mornings with delicious breakfasts at The Straits and ending the day with wood-fired pizza from The Backyard, which quickly became a family favorite. Having bike rentals available right at the Inn was such a convenience, and the heated pool was another highlight—we spent hours there soaking up the sun. The General Store was also a big plus, perfect for grabbing snacks and drinks to take with us on hikes and bike rides.

As someone who loves historic homes, I also appreciated the rich history and character of the property. Between the gorgeous grounds, the thoughtful amenities, and the welcoming atmosphere, Stonecliffe felt like the perfect blend of old-world charm and modern comfort.
