The book tells the sweet story of a young Abe Lincoln, at home in the hills of Kentucky, exploring the woods and rescuing animals along the way. Frog trapped in a snake’s mouth? No problem… young Abe would gladly set it free.

Abe is responsible for bringing corn to be ground to the grain mill, which is a couple miles from his family’s cabin. It is a long journey and Abe often gets distracted by the world around him as he waits for his cornmeal.

One day while walking home, Abe encounters an injured dog in the woods, and of course, gets right to work helping it!

Abe’s father is hesitant to let him keep Honey, but Abe promises the dog will do good things and he is allowed to stay. The two become inseparable and although Honey’s leg is permanently bent when healed, it doesn’t stop him from keeping up with young Abe on his adventures.
